How to install macOS Catalina ( Beta ) on a PC

IMPORTANT: This Guide is for Intel-based Hardware Only. Before installing macOS on a PC you need to meet minimum Hardware requirements. Before installing do a Full Backup, this Process request full disk format – all data will be deleted on the disk where the macOS will be installed )

The files (except macOS) are Open Source (legal – free to download and use) and already available on Internet. The macOS is available for download only via App Store. (Apple Store and Apple website – Public Beta).

Supported CPU’s Recommended:

  • Intel Core i3

  • Intel Core i9.
  • Maybe it will work with:  Intel Pentium and Celeron – Only Newer models (3rd gen or Later ) – FakeCPU ID kext is Requested ( GET FakeCPUID Kext Here )

1. Step – Downloading the macOS Catalina.

To download the macOS Catalina Public Beta joint the apple beta software – Click Here.
After you Sign Up/In, Go to Mac Tab – Select “Enroll your Mac” – and Download the macOS Public Beta Access Utility. 

After you download the macOS Beta Access Utility, mount the file and install the macOS Beta Access Utility PKG. This will take you into the Software Updates and give access to macOS Catalina.

2. Step – Creating a Boot USB Installer ( Basic )

To create boot USB installer you need a USB from 16GB or more (8GB is not enough). Before creating a USB installer first you will need to erase it via Disk Utility.

Select – Show All Devices and then select the USB. As a “name”, you can use any name, as format select “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” and as Scheme select “GUID partition Map” – Press Erase to Erase the USB. (Check the image below)

After the USB erased is done, Launch the Terminal, in Terminal paste this Command and press Enter / Return button on the keyboard.

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Catalina\ Beta.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/UNTITLED && echo Catalina Boot Drive Created

After you paste the command Terminal will ask for Password (Typing password will not be displayed), enter your Password and press Enter / Return on the keyboard. Then Terminal will ask to Confirm, press Y and Enter/Return on the keyboard.

3. Setting up a USB installer for a PC.

After creating the base USB installer is done, now you need additional files.

Installing Clover boot loader:

Open the clover boot loader and Continue until you Rich the Window where you can “Change Install Location and “Customize”. (Check the image below)

First select “Change Install Location” and as Install Location choose the USB INSTALLER and press Continue. (Check the image below)

Now in Clover Boot loader select “Customize”

In Customize Select: “Clover For UEFI Booting Only” and “Install Clover in the ESP”Then expand “UEFI Drivers” and “Recommended Drivers”.

Under “Recommended Drivers” select:

  • Audio Dxe
  • DataHubDxe
  • FSInject
  • SMCHelper.

Now scroll down and expand “Memory Fix Drivers”.
Under “Memory Fix Drivers” Select:
– OsXAptioFix3Drv

NOTE – If later you have boot problems, maybe you will need to use “OsxAptioFixDrv” or “OsxLowMemFixDrv” – All depends from the computer specs, different hardware may have a different reaction.

Now scroll down and expand “Additional Drivers”
Under “Additional Drivers” Select:

  • EmuVariableUefi
  • PartitionDxe

After all, drivers are selected, press the “Install” Button, Enter your Password and press “Install Software”, now the Boot loader will going install on USB, this process takes couple of minutes.

After installation is complete, on desktop the EFI partition from USB will appear.

Now navigate to EFI Partition from USB – EFI Folder – Clover Folder – Kext Folder. In the kext folder you have 10.15 folder and Other folder. In these folders copy all basic kext’s.

Now go back into the Clover folder and go to drivers folder – UEFI folder, and in the UEFI folder copy the HFSPlus.efi .

After you copy all basic kext’s into the 10.15 Folder and Other folder, Go back into the Clover folder. In Clover folder, Open the Config.plist via Clover Configurator.

In Clover Configurator, select ACPI and in ACPI under Fixes UNCHECK ALL Selected Options from the boot pages, from Page 1 and Page 2.

Now select the last option on the list System Parameters and in the System Parameters under the Inject Kexts set YES, and now you can save the changes in the Config.plist. ( if you get some message The document config.plist is on a volume that does not support permanent version storage. – Just press the OK button ) ( Check the image below )

Now creating the Boot USB Installer is DONE. But before you eject the USB installer create a New Folder ( Post install ) and in this folder place the bootloader, all basic kexts and the other files. All this files place on a USB installer ( all those files are important for post installation and setup the macOS Catalina ).

4. Bios settings

Before you start with installing the macOS Catalina in BIOS / UEFI menu you need to make some changes. This changes will not affect Windows installation or any other operating system. ( dual boot or windows or other OS installed on another disk )

BIOS / UEFI menu moseley is placed on DELETE button on the keyboard

  • Load Optimized Defaults .
  • If your CPU supports VT-d, disable it .
  • If your system has CFG-Lock, disable it .
  • If your system has Secure Boot Mode, disable it.
  • Set OS Type to Other OS .
  • If your system has IO SerialPort, disable it.
  • Set XHCI Handoff to Enabled ( this option may be under Peripherals or USB configuration in BIOS/UEFI menu ).
  • If you have a 6 series or x58 system with AWARD BIOS, disable USB 3.0 Save and exit.
  • If your system is UEFI based change the storage boot option from LEGACY to UEFI.
  • Save and EXIT.

5. Installing macOS Catalina

After you done with making all changes in BIOS / UEFI menu reboot your computer and access in BOOT menu ( the boot menu mostly is placed on the F12 on the keyboard ). In the Boot Menu select the USB with macOS Catalina and press Enter to boot into the Installer.

In the macOS installer select the USB with macOS catalina and press enter to boot. ( the USB mostly is named BOOT macOS install from Install macOS Catalina Beta )

( Now the macOS will boot into the installer, this process will take about 2-10 minutes.)

Inside the installer first select your language and press on arrow to continue ( check image below )

Now the macOS Utilities screen will appear, select Disk Utility and press Continue Button

In Disk Utility select the small windows in the upper left corner and there select Show all devices. ( check image below )

Here select your disk and go to the ERASE tab. As disk name you can use ANY name, as Format select Mac OS Extended ( Journaled ), and as Scheme select GUID Partition Map. After you select all of those options press the ERASE button to erase the disk. ( check image below )

After the disk erased close the Disk Utility to back into the macOS Utilities menu. In the macOS Utilities menu select Install macOS and press Continue button. In the next few windows press agree on the License Agreement. ( check image below )

At the last window select the disk where the macOS Catalina will be installed and press the install button. ( check image below )

IMPORTANT : While installing the macOS Catalina will reboot several times. After every reboot maybe you will need to continue with installing manually, to continue installing manually select the disk where macOS Catalina is installing. Installing process takes about 10-30 minutes ( check image below )

After installing the macOS Catalina continue with making personal settings and creating computer account.

6. Post Installing

After you boot in the macOS Catalina from the USB installer copy all basic FILES ( post install folder ) with basic kexts, boot loader and other files on desktop. After select Finder – Preferences – and check the box HARD DISKS

Open the Clover Boot loader and press the continue button until you reach the window where you need to chose disks. On this window select the disk where the macOS Catalina is installed and press the continue button. And on the next window select CUSTOMIZE button ( check image below )

2. In Customize Select: “Clover For UEFI Booting Only” and “Install Clover in the ESP” Then expand “UEFI Drivers” and “Recommended Drivers”.

Under “Recommended Drivers” select:

  • Audio Dxe
  • DataHubDxe
  • FSInject
  • SMCHelper.

Now scroll down and expand “Memory Fix Drivers”.
Under “Memory Fix Drivers” Select:
– OsXAptioFix3Drv

Under File system drivers select ApfsDriverLoader, if this driver is already selected then everything is ok.

NOTE – If later you have boot problems, maybe you will need to use “OsxAptioFixDrv” or “OsxLowMemFixDrv” – All depends from the computer specs, different hardware may have a different reaction.

Now scroll down and expand “Additional Drivers”
Under “Additional Drivers” Select: ( check image below )

  • EmuVariableUefi
  • PartitionDxe

After all, drivers are selected, press the “Install” Button, Enter your Password and press “Install Software”, now the Boot loader will going install on disk with macOS Catalina, this process takes couple of minutes. If you get message ( This package is incompatible with this version of macOS )press the INSTALL ANYWAY button

After installation is complete, on desktop the EFI partition from Catalina disk will appear.

Now navigate to EFI Partition from Catalina disk – EFI Folder – Clover Folder – Kext Folder. In the kext folder you have 10.15 folder and Other folder. In these folders copy all basic kext’s.

Now go back into the Clover folder and go to drivers folder- UEFI folder, and in the UEFI folder copy the HFSPlus.efi . ( check image below )

After you copy all basic kext’s into the 10.15 Folder and Other folder, Go back into the Clover folder. In Clover folder, Open the Config.plist via Clover Configurator.

In Clover Configurator, select ACPI and in ACPI under Fixes UNCHECK ALL Selected Options from the boot pages, from Page 1 and Page 2.

Under BOOT in default boot volume field type your disk name ( check image below )

Under Boot Graphics, CPU, Devices, Disable drivers leave it by default – Do not make any changes.

Under GUI set your screen resolution. ( check image below )

Under Graphics, Kernel and Kext patches and RT variables leave it by Default. – Do not make any changes.

SMBIOS – in SMBIOS select the system definitions, use system definition that are similar to your hardware or use newer system definitions with same or similar CPU. To select system definitions click on the two arrows. ( check image below )

Now select the last option on the list System Parameters and in the System Parameters under the Inject Kexts set YES, and now you can save the changes in the Config.plist. ( if you get some message The document config.plist is on a volume that does not support permanent version storage. – Just press the OK button ) ( Check the image below )

Basically is all done and now you can reboot the mac

7. Additional settings

After boot in the macOS Catalina you need to enable the sound and if you use Wi-Fi dongle you need to install manually. To enable the sound go to System Preferencesand select Sound. In Sound under Play sound effects through select your Audio Device ( speakers, HDMI , etc. ) Under output select your audio device ( speakers, HDMI , etc. ) and under input you can select microphone ( check image below )

Installing USB Wi-Fi dongle – For the most of devices for now there is no aveable official drivers, universal drivers are available only, V6 and V7. Try to install one version only, but if you issue with connecting to internet then install the booth versions. After installing reboot the macOS ( check image below )

Finally fully working macOS Catalina on a PC.

In public beta we didn’t notice some huge bugs, basically the macOS Catalina is working smooth without technical issues.
